Species Trill
Date Of Birth(DOB) March 12, 2360
Age 42

Physical Appearance

Height 6' 0"
Weight 185 lbs
Hair Color Black, graying slightly at the temples
Eye Color Dark green, intelligent and observant
Physical Description Lean but solid, with the wiry strength of someone who’s worked in tight crawlspaces most of his life.

Trill spots running from forehead to ankles

Faint burn scar on the back of his left hand

Acquired during an emergency plasma manifold repair during the Dominion War (USS Arcadia). He keeps it as a reminder of the crewman he saved.

Thin vertical scar behind right ear

From a minor cranial implant procedure after a neural shock during a core breach simulation at Utopia Planitia. It’s mostly cosmetic now but still visible when his hair is closely trimmed.

Slight heterochromia

His right eye is a darker green than his left—barely noticeable unless you're close. Some say it reflects the presence of multiple lifetimes.

Tattoo (not visible while in uniform)

A minimalist symbiont spiral design near his left shoulder blade, added after joining with Taran. Personal tribute to the bond.

Calloused fingertips

Years of hands-on work in Jeffries tubes and EPS junctions. He still prefers tactile tool work over holotools when possible.

Multi-lifetime expertise in both theory and fieldwork

Excellent at cross-disciplinary collaboration (esp. with Science and Operations)

Revered by junior engineers as a mentor

Has a nearly instinctive sense for warp core fluctuations

Weaknesses:
Sometimes too focused on the "right way" rather than the "fast way"

Struggles with delegation, preferring to solve problems himself

Keeps past hosts' failures to himself—sometimes haunted by decisions he didn't technically make

Personal History Jorel Taran was born in 2360 in the coastal city of Virek Port, a quiet community in Trill’s Mak’ra Province known more for its shipyards than its scholars. His parents were grounded, practical people—his mother a civic architect, his father a logistical supervisor—who believed in infrastructure, reliability, and putting things together that would last longer than you.

As a child, Jorel was quiet but relentlessly curious. He disassembled nearly every mechanical object he touched—then rebuilt them to be more efficient, or stranger. When he was 9, he rewired his family’s atmospheric regulator to respond to voice command. His parents weren’t thrilled, but they weren’t surprised when he applied to Starfleet Academy at 14. He entered at 15, barely old enough, but already with the demeanor of someone older.

His early Starfleet career was marked by discipline and excellence—but also emotional distance. He worked harder than anyone else, not because he wanted to impress, but because he was building something he couldn’t yet name. During his tour on the USS Soval, he was recommended for symbiont joining after saving a team from a ruptured plasma conduit. The Joining happened in 2370, and Taran—a symbiont with four accomplished but emotionally burdened hosts—became part of him.

The Joining transformed him. Not in personality, but in depth. Suddenly, he had the quiet counsel of a civil engineer, a wartime ops officer, a Starfleet instructor, and a theorist—all with their own regrets. It gave Jorel a strange serenity, but also a new responsibility. He wasn’t just a man building engines anymore. He was a legacy, and legacy is heavy.

He served with distinction aboard the USS Arcadia during the Dominion War, surviving multiple fleet engagements and sustaining injuries that required minor neural augmentation. But the war changed him. He grew more introspective, more reliant on the voices within him. When the war ended, he turned down promotions and combat posts, choosing instead to spend four years at Utopia Planitia, helping lay the groundwork for the next generation of exploratory cruisers.

It wasn’t enough.

Taran realized he couldn’t live in schematics alone. He needed motion. He returned to space aboard the USS Odyssey, modernizing its systems and leading junior engineers who quietly began to refer to him as “the Chief.” When tragedy struck and he briefly assumed the duties of first officer during a crisis, he proved he could lead—not just build.

Now serving aboard the USS Chronepsis, Jorel is considered one of the most respected engineering officers in the fleet. He trains his team rigorously, expects quiet excellence, and sees every plasma relay and shield grid as an extension of Starfleet’s greater mission: to keep people alive long enough to become more than what they were.

He’s still trying to balance his five lifetimes. Still chasing a perfect system that doesn’t exist. But he’s learned—slowly—that some things, like crew and family, aren’t systems to optimize. They’re people to trust.

And trust, like an engine, needs maintenance.
